What can they do with this information once they get it?

The short answer is ...almost anything they want. Here are some examples:

  • Change the billing address on your credit cards so they can order a "replacement" card and have it sent to them. Then identity thieves not only have a new card they can charge with, but the monthly statements are being sent to them so you'll never know what they are doing.
  • Open new credit accounts in your name. They can not only open new credit cards, but can apply for other loans as well including cars and homes.
  • Put utilities and phones in your name. Now they have a new cell phone and don’t have to pay the bills.
  • Counterfeit checks or debit cards. They can drain your account of all the money before you know what's happening.
  • Once they have incurred lots of new debt with your name that they don’t intend to pay back, they can declare bankruptcy in your name.
  • Get a driver's license or other ID with their photo and your name. Then if they get pulled over or arrested, they can say they are you. Not only have they ruined your credit, but they've also given you an arrest record.
