Verified by Visa
Protect your Visa card number online.
With Verified by Visa, a quick and simple step adds safety when shopping online at participating merchants. Merchants in the Verified by Visa program require online customers to use cards that are covered by the Visa security program.
What is it?
Verified by Visa uses personal passwords to help protect Visa card numbers against unauthorized use. Once you activate your card, no one else can use your Visa card at any of the participating online stores without your personal password.
How does it work?
You can register your card at http://www.visa.com/verifed/. Those who have not registered and start to place an online order with a merchant in the Verified by Visa program will see a message telling them they must have Verified by Visa to proceed. Their order will remain in place, but a box will pop up where they can register. There is no cost to register for Verified by Visa.
You will be asked to register, and devise a personal password and a personal message. Then, when you submit an order at any of the participating online stores, your personalized Verified by Visa window will appear. Check your personal message to verify it is an official Verified by Visa window. If it is correct, enter your password and submit.
Who does this affect?
New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union members who have a Visa Credit Card or Visa Check Card (used for signature-based purchases) are eligible for this free security service. While not all Visa credit card vendors offer this service, all Check Cards and Visa Credit Cards issued by your Credit Union are eligible for this service.
Choosing and Using Your Credit Card Wisely
A credit card is a necessity in today's electronic age. As we continue to move to a "cashless" society, a credit card is often the only way to guarantee a car rental or hotel reservation, and is by far the easiest way to shop by phone and over the Internet.
But not all credit cards are created equal. Often the offer that seems too good to be true will be just that - and contain "hidden" charges and fees.
For example, there are plenty of offers available for a limited-time 0% credit cards. But watch out for what your interest rate will be when that promotional period is over!
Also be aware that if you miss a monthly payment - even by a day or two - you may automatically incur a Default Rate of 20% or more. This Default Rate might even be enforced if you miss a payment on any other bill.
At New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union, you get the buying power and freedom of a credit card without any unpleasant surprises. That's why our VisaŽ Credit Cards provide these special benefits:
- Merchandise and travel rewards with our Platinum Card.
- Competitive interest rates every day. No tricky hidden fees or charges.
- A 25-day grace period that lets you pay off your charges each billing cycle and pay no interest.
- No annual fee.
- No telemarketers calling to promote other financial services.

Increased Fraud Protection

You can call 800-890-5097 anytime day or nigh, 24/7, to inquire about a blocked transaction and arrange to have it unblocked.
Visa estimates that 30% of card fraud is either a single transaction fraud or the first transaction of a fraud run. Blocking that first transaction, rather than reacting after the transaction, is the key to reducing activity that could negatively impact your financial identity. This enhanced system helps stop fraud before it can happen.
Only 1 in 10,000 authorizations out of 4.5 million transactions are being declined by financial institutions that use this protection system. We expect this to have very limited impact on our members - the impact will be primarily on those making transactions outside the U.S. We will not decline a transaction unless we are absolutely sure it should be declined. This service is part of our continuing efforts to reduce the possibility of fraud on members; accounts at New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union.
