Information for Parents

In an effort to teach kids -- the adult spenders and money managers of tomorrow  about personal finance, New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union provides a number of products and services that help young people -- and their parents -- manage their money and prepare for the future.

New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union:

  • regularly visits local middle and high schools to present money management seminars to students.
  • provides a high school financial planning curriculum from the National Endowment for Financial Education to local teachers at no charge.
  • offers an educational CD-ROM financial program from Visa® for middle and high school students.
  • presents evening seminars for teens and younger children are so popular that we plan to expand the number we offer each year.

Through our partnership with the Credit Union National Association (NCUA), we are able to provide Googolplex websites that are customized for various age groups focusing on elementary, middle and high school students. The Googolplex websites:

  • have stories, games, and puzzles for elementary, middle, and high school students.
  • talk all about money -- getting it, saving it, spending it, and borrowing it.
  • give examples of how business and the economy works
  • show how young people can take control of their financial future.
  • make you laugh as well.

NCUA's Guides to Independence website:

  • contains interactive activities to make learning fun.
  • provide valuable financial information from young adults who share their experiences with honesty and humor.
  • limits courses to only about 15 minutes.
  • offers young adults free eMusic downloads just for spending a few minutes learning about money management. Each course completed with a qualified registration earns at least one music download. Bonus downloads appear randomly, so a student may earn 2, 5, or 10 tunes.

Unlike other financial institutions, where it can take as much as $100 to open a basic savings account, a child or teen can open an account at New Mexico Educators Federal Credit Union with only $5 -- the first step, we hope, to future financial savvy and security. We also provide:

  • Checking and Visa® Check Cards*
  • First car financing*
  • Coverdell Education Savings Accounts*
  • Individual Retirements Accounts (IRAs)*

The bottom line on financial education is that it works to help children live better lives as adults.
